Matthew Harold “JoJo” Moore passed away on Monday January 17, 2022, from complications related to his spinal cord condition. He was 74 years old. Matthew was born on June 17, 1947, in White Plains, New York. He went to White Plains High School graduating in 1965. He attended the Morris Harvey College now called the University of Charleston in West Virginia. He held a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and two Masters of Science in Education. Matthew is survived by his wife Marguerite “Peggy” Moore and his 4 children Marissa Nolan (Moore) husband Daniel Nolan, Melanie Hasbrouck (Moore), Michelle Yearwood (Moore) husband Leslie Yearwood Jr, Meaghan Hartman (Moore) husband Timothy Hartman. Grandchildren, Nathaniel Nolan (12), Quentin Yearwood (12), Nyomi Yearwood (11), Lilah Nolan (10), Janessa Yearwood (9), Donovan Hasbrouck (15), Hayden Hasbrouck (4), Lilliana Hartman (3). Sister Sandra Gustaferro, Nephew Philip Gustaferro wife Ayajaira Gustaferro and Great-niece Gianna Gustaferro (11). Step-brothers Michael Carravone wife Stephanie and John Carravone wife Jennifer and Stepmother Lori Moore. Predeceased by his Father Matthew George Moore, his Mother Ellen Moore and Mother-in-law Marcelline DeMarco and Brother-in-law Philip Gustaferro. Matt was a sports enthusiast and natural teacher. He started teaching in Mount Vernon before moving to Peekskill City Schools where he taught physical education and health for over 35 years. In addition to teaching, Matt was a beloved wrestling coach where he made an impact on and off the mat in the lives of his wrestlers. Matt was a Volleyball official and Softball Umpire. Matt also played for the White Plains Rugby Club for 20 plus years. Matt was active in both the Peekskill community and Church. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Peekskill where he also taught Sunday School. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Cortlandt Hook and Ladder. After he retired, he continued to volunteer as a health teacher at the Hudson Valley Christian Academy for over 15 years. At the age of 44, Matt had a catastrophic injury playing Rugby in 1991 where he broke his neck and became a C3/4 complete quadriplegic. This injury didn’t hold Matt back from living his life and only 2 years after his injury Matt returned to teaching and coaching. This was only possible because of the support of many. The Peekskill teachers were an integral part of caring for Matt and his family, the Rugby Club whose support over the 30 years never wavered, the Fire department helped out whenever needed, the many dedicated nurses that became a part of the family and the Church family has upheld Matt in countless ways, especially in lifting him up spiritually. Matt was a man of many words who also lived through his actions that exemplified everything he stood for and shaped the lives of thousands of people. He was a champion in every way. His faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is what sustained him through many trials. Through coaching, teaching, speaking, and always showing up, he impacted everyone around him and beyond. His dedication to his family, friends, students and strangers alike has left a profound imprint on all of us. We are forever grateful to this remarkable man for allowing us to be part of his legacy that will live on for generations to come. Matt’s favorite verse in the Bible is: Isaiah 40:31, “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” Due to the ongoing pandemic, the viewing and funeral service will be private. The service will be live streamed January 22, 2022 at 11:45 AM on https://www.fbcpeekskill.org. A memorial open to all will be held in June of 2022 when we celebrate the life and impact of Matthew “JoJo” “Coach” Moore.
