Maria A. Burrett
August 28, 1940 - February 25, 2022
God has welcomed his Angel home. It is with great sadness that Maria A. Burrett, 81, a near lifetime resident of Peekskill, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 25, 2022. She was born in Manhattan, NY to Rosemary (Walsh) and Joseph Thomas Lounsbury on August 28, 1940. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of over fifty years, Dennis R. G. Burrett, "The Guv". Maria was a graduate of the Assumption School in Peekskill. She went on to Ladycliff Academy in Highland Falls where she graduated in 1958. She later attended the Westchester Business Institute where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1990 with her Associate Degree in Occupational Studies, majoring in Secretarial Administration. Maria loved her work at the VA Hospital in Montrose before she went on to work at a medical facility in Elmsford. She then worked at the Ossining Parks and Recreation Department, before transferring to the City of Peekskill Department of Public Works (DPW). Maria became Office Manager for Peekskill DPW and retired in 2015 after 25 years of service. "Momma" left a lasting impression on anyone who entered city hall. For her Retirement, the mayor dedicated a street in her honor, "Maria Burrett Blvd", near the DPW garage in Peekskill. Maria dedicated her entire life to selfless service. When she was younger, she volunteered with the visiting nurses of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick and Poor and the Graymoor Press. She later volunteered on the Peekskill Ambulance Corps which is where she met her husband Dennis "Dan", "The Guv''Burrett. She spent over 30 years volunteering at Hudson Valley Hospital (NYPHVH), continuing even throughout COVID. Maria was a devout Catholic and Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Peekskill. She was a faithful choir member for over 40 years. In 1979, Maria sang with the newly formed Assumption choir at the 100th anniversary of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Maria was always dedicated to her parish. She faithfully helped out every Monday at Bingo along with many Assumption activities and later on with CCD. Maria danced away at Tarry Squares, a square dancing club in Tarrytown, and also took classical dance in Ossining, both with her youngest son Martin. She sang her heart out at her retirees' club, Hotsie Totsie, in Cornwall, with her youngest sister Elena. Maria also enjoyed many luncheons and gatherings with old coworkers and friends, joyfully attended her weekly water workouts, endlessly laughed with her daughter the "comedian" Diana, worked hard during her home workouts with her "Drill Sergeant" daughter Judy, and put her eldest son Danny hard to work around the house. Whether getting together with family and friends; staying at home crocheting and knitting items to donate to Birthright; or coloring those intricate coloring books, Maria always kept herself busy. Maria was the type of person who would go above and beyond to always help others. She was the most patient, kind, loving, caring, and sweetest woman anyone could have ever been blessed to know. She was carried through life by her strength, perseverance, and faith in God. She lit up a room with her beautiful smile and gentle soul, and will truly be missed by all who knew her. Maria is survived by her four children, Daniel (Erika) Burrett, Diana (Glen) Baisley, Martin Burrett, Judith Burrett, her three grandchildren, Jessica Baisley, Martin Craig Jr., Christopher Andrew Burrett, her younger sister Elena (and the late John "Brud" Marshall) Robb, and many nieces and nephews. Maria was predeceased by her older sister, Joanna Lounsbury and her younger brother, James Abram Lounsbury.
