March 10, 1975 - August 9, 2020
Heather McIlrath, New Yorker at heart, was born in Connecticut on March 10th. In what has been described by those closest to her as, “a massive bummer,” Heather passed away late on August 9th, 2020. She now joins her mother, Kathleen Smith, and all those others for whom she cared about that left before her. Presumably, she will also be met by a small herd of dogs and cats. Heather is survived by her husband, James, her children, Kelly Buford, Robert McIlrath, and Katie McIlrath, and her father, Al; all of whom will go on to miss her in too many ways to be listed not only here, but also anywhere else. Heather was known for her laugh, for her love of animals, and for her strong, dark sense of humor. She loved sunflowers, Halloween, and all things Purple. Most of all she loved her family. Heather knew family wasn’t just who you were related to, but the people who you choose to let into your life. In that sense, her family tree stretches tall and wide. She would not want her memory plagued by the sadness of her death, nor embellished to be what she wasn’t. What’s truly impressive is the shadow she casts without any embellishment. Heather was a champion for what she thought was right, and her passion to defend her beliefs was undeniable. She was quick to anger in defense of those she loved, but any capacity she had for motivated anger was far, far outmatched by that for love and compassion, with which she was overflowing. If you were lucky enough to have experienced that love it is easy to testify to its intensity. She brought joy and comfort wherever she was. She is gone too soon and has left a large space for the rest of us to fill. Her family is hosting a limited, informal “good-bye” gathering at their home, on Saturday, August 22, from 2-5 PM. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. For details email Kim McIlrath @ [email protected] A Celebration of life service will be arranged in 2021. Please feel free to leave a condolence for the family on our website.
